INFO ALERT: Arvin Oil and Gas Ordinance passes first reading

The oil and gas ordinance that creates a virtual ban on new oil production in the city of Arvin passed its first hearing at the Arvin City Council meeting the evening of July 3.

The vote was 3-0 with two council members absent.

The issue now goes to Council on July 17 for its second hearing and, if passed, will be adopted as law.

BizFed Central Valley members made a strong showing at the July 3 meeting. Speakers included Suzanne Noble, WSPA; Ed Hazard, NARO-CA; Tracy Leach, Kern Citizens for Energy; Russell Johnson, Associated Builders & Contractors; and me.

Each speaker made excellent points about the need for more environmental review, ill defined parameters in the ordinance and misconceptions of current oilfield practices.

We will continue to try and get the facts out at the next meeting and hope you will join us!
